Scilla Elworthy: Fighting with non-violence

How do you deal with a bully without becoming a thug? In this wise and soulful talk, peace activist Scilla Elworthy maps out the skills we need -- as nations and individuals -- to fight extreme force without using force in return. To answer the question of why and how non-violence works, she evokes historical heroes -- Aung San Suu Kyi, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela -- and the personal philosophies that powered their peaceful protests. Yes, these behaviors must be self analyzed in order to relearn a more positive way of conducting ones self. Both by the oppressors and the oppressed. The oppressed(bullied) must not let themselves be in fear of ____. Because when you allow yourself to be in fear, you already allow yourself to be inferior to ____. They should remember that the same violence they are being subjected to, they too are capable of unleashing such violence, but because of self restraint and pre programming they do not. The oppressors(bullies) should be exposed to situations that allow them to grow empathy for those they oppressed and more emotional intelligence. They should also feel, it is not such an task to victimize those who resist. The more who resist the more difficult the task, would likely outweigh the efforts to victimize. Learning and relearning must take place on both sides to see the good of the whole. The thing is, the need for change must be felt by the individuals themselves. We cannot force any to stop bullying and cannot force any to resist being bullied.
