With this global pandemic, and its decree to ‘stay at home,’ we have all been given a rare opportunity to experience together a collective time of retreat and withdrawal. We did not ask for this, we may not want it, but this is being given to us for a good reason.
The wording we use to describe what we are experiencing determines the way we experience it. Thinking ‘lock down,’ even ’stay at home,’ gives us a fearful, anxious view of what is happening, while thinking in terms of the archetypal experience this whole thing represents gives us a much more holistic and hopeful way of understanding its purpose for us.
Running throughout world mythology, where deep truths reside, is a pattern of transformation made up of many archetypes — types of experiences necessary to complete this recurring pattern. Each archetype in this pattern has its own time and purpose. One of those timeless, universal archetypes, known variously as The Night Sea Journey, Joseph in the Well, the Temple Interior, and Jonah in the Belly of the Whale, comes into our lives to swallow us into the unknown whenever there is a need for us to slow down, leave the familiar behind, retreat from whatever we’re doing, turn inward, reassess everything we thought we knew, and refocus. It’s not just a matter of waiting out whatever storm it happens to be; it is much more a time of reevaluation and reappraisal. This is meant to be a time of quickening, of going inward for renewal, and for reminding us who we really are.
Experiencing this archetype together, as one human family facing the exact same challenge in the same way at the same time, is indeed rare. It may never have happened before in recorded history, the way it is happening globally now. The threshold guardians, gargoyles, and dragons that normally block the entrance to this realm have disappeared so we can all experience the higher silences within, together, all at once. That’s how late it is.
Entering this unknown realm carries with it an impending metamorphosis. It is time for us all to shed our outer character, die to the limitations of time, and prepare to return, committed to building the world anew. Having us turn inward and focus on where we are going and what is needed to get there, is the universe’s way of ensuring that the collective transformation already underway will be completed, and that the evolutionary impulse is consciously carried out.
Humanity is becoming more aware now of our collective responsibility to use this time of reflection to our mutual benefit. The urgency of taking action now, before it is too late, is more apparent than ever.
Experiencing this archetype of retreat into the unknown together as one human family has come at this time to demonstrate that fear does not help, all things do pass, and the Imperishable remains. This common experience is taking us one step closer to the new world we envision. It is giving us deeper insight into our inherent interdependence.
Collectively slowing down and turning inward, we’re seeing more now than we thought we ever knew. When humanity finally emerges from this retreat into the unknown, we’ll come out knowing for sure that:
· We are living in transformative times;
· We can feel more empathy and compassion toward others;
· We can appreciate more the things we have, and give of them more freely;
· We are not only more connected than we thought, we are inseparable;
· Our collective strength is dependent upon our unified action;
· We can trust — and live more by — our collective wisdom;
· We can nurture a spirit of common endeavor;
· We can place the sanctity of existence above all else; and,
· We can foster a spiritual consciousness that embraces all humanity.
Add your own insights and realizations to this list; what are you learning from this experience of turning inward at this time? What will you know for sure from having been thrust into the unknown during this global pandemic?

“For all the people of the earth, the Creator has planted a Sacred Tree under which they may gather, and there find healing, power, wisdom, and security. The roots of this tree spread deep into the body of Mother Earth. Its branches reach upward like hands praying to Father Sky. The fruits of this tree are the good things the Creator has given to the people: Teachings that show the path to love, compassion, generosity, patience, wisdom, justice, courage, respect, humility and many other wonderful gifts.Read more
We are living in extraordinary times of change. This is an understatement indeed. I write to you this day with much compassion and care for your wellbeing. I have been saying lately that we are getting our PHD as human beings:
*Patience *Humility *Discernment. This time is full of both grief and gifts, chaos and emergence. We are being forged in the fires of transformation. Adversity is a powerful personal trainer.
Fear is a heavy weight to lift. We have all built circuitry to respond to these times of 'high alert' with a constant vigilance that saps us of our vitality, robs us of our peace of mind. We are being invited to grow a new musculature of compassion, resilience and self love more than ever before in our lives. Truly, all that is not essential is being distilled as we find how little we really need to be happy, how more sleep and less hurry offer our bodies and minds a much needed opportunity to reset and rejuvenate.
We live in extraordinary times. Life as we knew it, is not. Our experience of life on this planet is changing in such a rapid and dramatic fashion that our yesterdays are quickly rendered unrecognizable with each new today.
We face urgent, complex social, political, economic, environmental, and healthcare crises. Attempts to manage or solve these issues with the old mindset will not work. Einstein said, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it. You have to see the world anew.” The COVID-19 pandemic has created the ideal conditions for profound and essential whole-systems change, enabling whole-systems healing and whole-systems health. These unprecedented times are ushering in a radical transformation of consciousness.

Twenty years ago or so, I remember (so well) watching the hit movie, Twister, when it came out in the theaters. It was a complete, adrenaline-filled, tense, and NOT-so-relaxing one-hour-and 53-minute-experience for me. There were many scenes of devastating, destructive storms as the main characters were storm-chasers doing research. Dark clouds, high winds and flying debris were common scenes in the movie. Set in a rural area, the flying tractors, semi-trailer truck and other farm equipment were familiar to my eye.
A few specific moments in the movie created a big impact on me. First, among the plethora of flying debris, the special effects managed to capture what appeared to be a real, living cow flying through the sky, moving effortlessly across the big screen as the tornado lifted it and propelled it through the air. The odd image burned a poignant memory in my mind.Read more

Stop. Just stop.
It is no longer a request. It is a mandate.
We will help you.
We will bring the supersonic, high speed merry-go-round to a halt
We will stop
the frenetic, furied rush of illusions and “obligations” that keep you from hearing our
single and shared beating heart,
the way we breathe together, in unison.
Our obligation is to each other,
As it has always been, even if, even though, you have forgotten.
Greetings and welcome to our collective awareness. I imagine you’ve been hanging around, shifting form, and waiting to be welcomed to the world for a long time—perhaps centuries. Well, here you are. I see you. I acknowledge you. And I want to be your friend. Can we find ways to honor and respect one another and work together for the good of the whole?
That’s probably a strange request. I bet you don’t hear that much. Be friends? Most of the world is actually waging a war against you. Fighting. Battling. Fearing. Hiding. Many are scurrying around in a frenetic whirlwind of life-saving, preventative, and heroic activities, while cussing at you and hating you, praying and wishing you would just disappear. You’re not very popular around here. I’m sorry, you are sorely misunderstood.Read more

Seeds of Peace was founded to create opportunities for young people to come
together across lines of conflict.
"Haifa Staiti met a kindred spirit at a lakeside summer camp in Maine. The two teens talked for hours under the trees. “I felt I was being heard, and I felt comfortable about sharing my experiences,” she said, adding that they remain good friends to this day.
It was no ordinary summer camp, but one meant to break down divides. Staiti, a Palestinian, and her friend, an Israeli, were early participants in the Seeds of Peace program that allows Israelis and Palestinians to meet in a neutral environment."
EXCERPTS BELOW FROM "We Are Bio-Cosmic Beings Learning to Live in a Living Universe1" BY Duane Elgin
The transition from self-serving separation to world-serving cooperation confronts us with an evolutionary crisis: Who are we? What kind of Universe do we live in? Where are we going?
Seeing ourselves as part of the fabric of creation awakens our sense of connection with, and compassion for, the totality of life.
Awakening to our larger identity as both unique and inseparably connected with a co- arising Universe transforms feelings of existential separation into experiences of subtle communion as bio-cosmic beings. We are far richer, deeper, more complex, and more alive than we ever thought.
We don’t need a miracle to save us—we are already inside the miracle of sustaining aliveness. Instead of being saved from death, our job is to bring mindful attention to our ever-emerging aliveness in the here and now.We are shifting from seeing ourselves as accidental creations wandering through a lifeless cosmos without meaning or purpose to seeing ourselves engaged in a sacred journey of discovery in a Universe with stunning depth and richness of purpose.
Annemarie Schimmel said, “Once the journey to God is finished, the infinite journey in God begins.”
A felt ethics emerges from our intuitive connection with the living Universe in the form of a ‘moral tuning fork.’ We can each tune into the non-local field of life and sense what is in harmony with the wellbeing of the whole.
But what does ‘home’ mean in our time of profound, global change? Is home a familiar dwelling? Or is home a visceral and intuitive feeling that we have deep inside? For many, home is a feeling of safety, acceptance just as you are, and a sense of belonging. We also have the feeling of being home when we are deeply relaxed within ourselves and making meaningful contributions to the wellbeing of those around us. With this as a guide, we can anticipate that, as the old world breaks down economically, socially, and environmentally, new searches for ‘home’ are underway—and this is leading many to search for new kinds of community. As the world unravels, smaller communities can provide lifeboats of resilience and belonging to weather the storms of transition.
